On September 22nd, at 7:30 AM, we are hosting a special event that not only celebrates our school’s commitment to sustainability but also invites everyone to be a part of a greener, healthier future. Welcome to Generaal De La Rey Primary’s Spekboom Day!
What is Spekboom?
For those who might be wondering, Spekboom (Portulacaria afra) is a remarkable and indigenous South African succulent. It’s not just any plant; it’s a superhero in the world of ecology! Spekboom has the incredible ability to absorb vast amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. In fact, it’s known as one of the most effective plants in the fight against climate change.
Why Spekboom Day Matters
At Generaal De La Rey Primary, we believe in teaching our students not only about academic excellence but also about their responsibilities towards our planet. Spekboom Day is an embodiment of our commitment to environmental sustainability.
On this day, we aim to:
- Plant Spekboom: We will be planting Spekboom on our school grounds, not just as a symbolic gesture but as a real contribution to offsetting carbon emissions.
- Raise Awareness: We want to educate our students and community about the importance of native plants, carbon sequestration, and how each one of us can make a difference.

How You Can Get Involved
Spekboom Day is not just for our students and staff; it’s an open invitation to our entire community. Here’s how you can get involved:
- Join Us: Please come and be a part of Spekboom Day on September 22nd at 7:30 AM. We will gather on the school grounds to plant Spekboom together.
- Donate Spekboom: If you have Spekboom plants to spare, we would be grateful for your donations. These plants will find a new home on our school premises and contribute to a greener future.
- Make a Financial Contribution: If you would like to support our Spekboom planting efforts but cannot donate plants directly, you can contribute financially. Your donations will be used to purchase Spekboom for our school.
Remember, every Spekboom planted is a step closer to a healthier planet and a brighter future for our children.
